In 1951, she was the recipient of the first ever Palanca Award for Short Story in Filipino, for her short story "Kuwento ni Mabuti", which has been cited as the most anthologized Tagalog language short-story.
Her 1952 short story, (the widely anthologized) The Virgin, won two first prizes: of the Philippines Free Press Literary Awards and of the Palanca Awards.
Its alumni include the current editor-in-chief of FHM Philippines, Allan Madrilejos; the managing editor of Newsbreak Magazine, Chay Hofileña; and numerous recipients of Palanca Awards, including Mikael de Lara Co.

Professor Garcia has won several literary awards including the Palanca and the National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle.
Lualhati garnered several Palanca Awards (1980, 1983 and 1984) for her novels ‘GAPÔ, Dekada '70 and Bata, Bata… Pa’no Ka Ginawa? exposing injustices and chronicling women activism during the Marcos era.
Her first collection of poems, Montage, won the Iowa State University Best Poetry Award (1969), and first prize (poetry category) in the Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (1974).
