Since leaving Parliament Hereora has returned to Union organising, working with the SFWU Union in mediation talks at the Papakura Griffin Foods manufacturing plant.
Numerous schools use Kia kaha as, or as part of, their mottoes, including Te Aute College, Hawke's Bay (Whakatangata kia kaha); Tikipunga High School, Whangarei (Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui); Golden Bay High School, Takaka (Ake ake kia kaha); Rotorua Intermediate School, Rotorua (Kia kaha, kia maia); and Rosehill Intermediate School, Papakura (Whaia kia kaha) and Te Awamutu Te Awamutu College and Kingwood Park High school (Kia Kaha).
It existed until the 1989 local government reforms, when "Papakura City" was subsumed by "Papakura District".

The Mayor of Papakura was the head of the municipal government of Papakura, New Zealand, and presided first over the Papakura City (1975–1989) and then Papakura District (1989–2010).
Collins had originally indicated to seek nomination for the seat of Howick (which the Electoral Commission later redrew and renamed to Botany following objections to the boundaries to the neighbouring electorate of Pakuranga), but then stood for the Papakura seat, which also shared common boundaries with Clevedon.
The previous area was referred to as a small area of greater Papakura, but has now developed into a single suburban area, stretching south of the Addison complex, west of the Southern Railway Line (parallel to Porchester Road), down to Old Wairoa Road, and right to the western border of the Papakura Military Camp.

Papakura North is home to the national headquarters of the New Zealand Special Air Service, a branch of the New Zealand Army.
The top and northern side of the hill is known as a high economic living area, with multi-million dollar estates and views of the greater Auckland metropolitan area and Manukau Heads, the eastern and south-eastern views the rural areas of Franklin District and the Bombay Hills towards Waikato, with the low lying areas closer to Papakura being low economic areas run by the state and Housing New Zealand.
In 1911 Papakura travelled to England to attend the Festival of Empire.

Papakura played centre for Warrington's first grade team in 14 October 1911 in a 13–8 win over Broughton Rangers at Wilderspool Stadium.

From Rotorua, Papakura toured Australia twice with the New Zealand Māori side; in 1908 with the original touring party and again as captain of the 1909 New Zealand Māori side, he also represented Australasia.
The locomotive and wagon repair facilities saw steam-era engine sheds and servicing facilities at Auckland, Otahuhu, Papakura, Helensville and Mercer all close as well as the 1950s-era Parnell Diesel Depot.
