On July 5, 1973, while serving as Army Chief of Staff, Habyarimana seized power by overthrowing Grégoire Kayibanda and ousting the then-ruling Parmehutu party.
Like Parmehutu, the MDR's primary base of political support was in the center of the country, particularly Kayibanda's home prefecture of Gitarama.
