He was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, then moved to India, and is the son of the noted economist A.K. Dasgupta.

Dasgupta was educated in Rajghat Besant School in Varanasi, India, obtaining his Matriculation Degree in 1958, and pursued undergraduate studies in Physics at the Hans Raj College, India, graduating in 1962 and in Mathematics at Trinity College Cambridge, graduating in 1965.
