As of the turn of the 20th century, there were about 40 houses of Pashai in the area.
Article 16 of the constitution states that "from amongst Pashto, Dari, Uzbeki, Turkmani, Baluchi, Pashai, Nuristani and other current languages in the country, Pashto and Dari shall be the official languages of the state."
Its population, which is 99% Pashai with a small number of Pashtuns, was estimated at 120,000 in 2002, of whom 28,000 were children under 12.
