Jakpot soon began to notice the exploitation his dad went through because he was an immigrant, but, “Jakpot's first brush with the reality of hate crimes against immigrants occurred after his family moved to Patchogue, New York. It was in that Long Island town that Marcelo Lucero, a dry cleaner employee from Ecuador, was murdered simply for being Hispanic” (Latinrapper.com).
In the spring of 1966, Cooley was among the BTNRC activists who testified in favor of a class action lawsuit filed by Patchogue attorney Victor Yannacone against the Suffolk County Mosquito Control Commission, seeking to force the commission to stop using the insecticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in the local salt marshes.
He was in private practice of law in Patchogue from 1961 to 1962, then in Port Jefferson, Centereach, and Smithtown, moving back and forth between these locations from 1962 to 1994.
