Alex Katehakis became certified as a sex addiction therapist by Patrick Carnes, Ph.D.
It is based on the work of Patrick Carnes, namely his "Thirty Task mode" for sex addiction recovery.
As a result a new illness category propounded by Carnes is not included in the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.”
A psychologist involved in sexual addiction treatment, Patrick Carnes, encourages self-defined sobriety in his writings, saying that a no-masturbation definition of sobriety is only appropriate for some sex addicts and that bottom lines can in fact be modified over time.
Patrick Carnes believes that people become addicted to sex in the same way they become addicted to alcohol or drugs.

Patrick Carnes did much to popularise the concept of compulsive sexual behaviour as an addiction.
