Late German producer Bernd Eichinger is said to have worked 15 years on convincing novelist Patrick Süskind just to agree to a film adaptation of his book Perfume.
He first achieved directorial success with the TV series Monaco Franze, eventually moving on to create several notable films with the aid of Patrick Süskind's writing.
On Love and Death is a collection of essays written by Patrick Süskind concerning the connection between "the two elemental forces of human existence."
Süskind lives as a recluse in Munich, in Seeheim (Lake Starnberg), and in France.

For his screenplay of Rossini, directed by Helmut Dietl, he won the Screenplay Prize of the German Department for Culture in 1996.
It also plays a role in the novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind; the perfumier Baldini, who takes the protagonist Grenouille as his apprentice, owns a shop on the bridge.
Amongst the best-known authors he has translated are Molière, Goldoni, Patrick Süskind and Heinar Kipphardt.
