He worked with Patty Cafferata (later State Treasurer of Nevada and Gubernatorial candidate in 1986) and her mother, Barbara Vucanovich (who was Senator Paul Laxalt’s chief of staff and later the first member of Congress from Northern Nevada).
Cannon was nearly defeated in his first re-election bid in 1964, holding off Republican Lieutenant Governor Paul Laxalt in one of the closest Senate elections ever.
