When asked in 2001 to contribute a new version of Minuet in Hell for Big Finish Productions' range of audio dramas featuring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, Lear extensively rewrote the play but due to the demands of the recording schedule producer Gary Russell completed the final episodes of the script and took a co-writer's credit.
The character of the Minister of Chance (now played by Julian Wadham) is played in a podcast-only audio drama entitled The Minister of Chance, also featuring Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and Jenny Agutter.
Having contacted Paul McGann, who indicated his willingness to participate, Moffat then constructed the mini-episode to serve as an additional surprise for the fans, as well as serving as an introductory piece to "The Day of the Doctor".
