His expeditions included the lower Pechora River in 1875 along with John Alexander Harvie-Brown as well as a visit to Heligoland at the home of Heinrich Gätke.
The river then flows north to Pechora town, where the railway from Vorkuta crosses, then north to Ust-Usa where the Usa River joins from the east (The Usa was once an important river route into Siberia.).
It saw actual on-the-ground work done, of the most unusual kind: on March 23, 1971, three 15-kiloton underground nuclear charges were exploded near the village of Vasyukovo in Cherdynsky District of Perm Oblast, some 100 km north of the town of Krasnovishersk.

In the 19th century, communication between the Kama and the Pechora was conducted mostly over a 40-km portage road between Cherdyn and Yaksha.
Here he headed labour camps, railway and military projects in Ukhta, Vorkuta, Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Saratov and Pechora.
In the past, Yaksha was the northern (Pechora) end of the portage road connecting Cherdyn in the Kama River basin with the Pechora.
