Prof. Fernández-Pello has research experience in several topics of combustion, but he is better known for his contributions in three main topics: Flame spread over solid fuels, smouldering combustion and microscale combustion.
He spent his childhood in the village of Orajärvi in the Pello municipality in northern Finland.

Another noteworthy exhibition at C. Grimaldis Gallery featured works on paper by the sculptors; Jene Highstein, Pello Irazu, Mel Kendrick, Ulrich Ruckriem, Richard Serra, Joel Shapiro, and John Van Alstine titled "Drawings By Sculptors" opened in January 1996 at the 523 N Charles Street location.
Geographically the townships and municipalities that make up the area are Haparanda, Övertorneå, Pajala and Kiruna in Sweden, and Tornio, Ylitornio, Pello, Kolari, Muonio and Enontekiö in Finland.
