The Bristol and District League was originally formed in 1892 on the suggestion of Gloucester City player Percy Stout, although Gloucester did not join the league until the following season.
Stout came from a notable sporting family, his father William Stout, was a Diamond Sculls winner, while his brother, Percy also played international rugby for England.
Several of Stout's brothers were high profile sportsmen, and he followed younger brother Frank in joining association football team Gloucester City.
