In addition to common species such as Dog's mercury (Mercurialis perennis), Primrose (Primula vulgaris), Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta), Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa), Wood sorrel (Oxalis acetosella) and Ramsons (Allium ursinum), a number of scarce species are present.
The ground flora is indicative of the calcareous nature of the site, with Dog's Mercury (Mercurialis perennis) being locally dominant.
According to ancient sources, Perennis was removed by the influential freedman and chamberlain of Commodus, Marcus Aurelius Cleander, and in 188 Aebutianus suffered a similar fate.
