She was awarded a scholarship to Perth College, where she studied Indonesian, before winning an undergraduate scholarship to the Australian National University (ANU) in 1983.
Brian was also a lecturer at Perth College of Further Education in Scotland for many years, and a Board of Management member at Stow College, Glasgow.
