6 unusual facts about Peter Taylor

Green Guide

Following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, when 96 people were killed, Lord Justice Taylor in his report noted that "..evidence I have received suggesting that the Green Guide may not be followed as closely as is desirable, I consider that when it is revised it needs to be given more effect".

Peter Taylor, Baron Taylor of Gosforth

The next year, he held that Nottinghamshire police had acted negligently in firing CS gas into a house knowing there would be a fire risk and not having fire engines on standby.

His father Louis was born in Leeds to where the family had emigrated, and became a doctor; his mother came from the rabbinical Palterovich family who had emigrated to Leeds in 1895 (Taylor was therefore a distant cousin of actress Gwyneth Paltrow).

Taylor's recommendations, published on 29 January 1990, stated that all First and Second Division (which became the Premier League and Division One in 1992) stadiums had to be all-seater by August 1994, and that the rest of the Football League should follow suit by August 1999.

Not only did he start his tenure by holding an unprecedented press conference, he appeared as a guest on BBC television's Question Time and as a castaway on Desert Island Discs.

2006–07 Crystal Palace F.C. season

Peter Taylor took the job at Crystal Palace after Hull City paid a compensation package of £300,000 to chairman Simon Jordan.

Reelfoot Lake

A contemporary front-page account in the Nashville Banner tells that one lawyer—Captain Quentin Rankin—was murdered by being hanged and then shot, while the other—Colonel R.Z. Taylor (grandfather of author Peter Taylor)—escaped by swimming across the lake in the dark while being shot at by Night Riders.

Utricularia kumaonensis

It was originally described by Daniel Oliver in 1859, although Peter Taylor asserted in his 1989 monograph that Michael Pakenham Edgeworth's 1847 description of Diurospermum album is U. kumaonensis.

Utricularia regia

The authors placed the new species into Peter Taylor's section Psyllosperma, which has subsequently been merged with section Foliosa based on molecular phylogenetics.

Utricularia spruceana

Peter Taylor had reduced this species to a synonym under U. resupinata in 1967 because the only difference between the specimens he examined at the time was the smaller size of U. spruceana.
