In addition to powerlifting he had become actively involved in strength athletics and in 1986 won the National Truck Pulling Championships (sponsored by ASA/Bristol Street Motors) and came second to Peter Tregloan in 1986 in the Midland's Strongest Man competition.

In 2001 a bad bench press led to a third place finish in Cape Town although in December of that year in Amberg he set the world record for the Masters age category in Deadlift, Squat and Total.

The following year in Murnau, Germany he was sixth in the European Championships, but came fourth in the World Championships that year in Perth, Australia.
