A forerunner of the present house is thought to have been built by the merchant and moneylender, Sir Peter Vanlore (1547–1627).
Dutch merchant and lord of the manor, Sir Peter Vanlore, lies with wife in heraldic splendour, accompanied by nine children.
He built and lived in a mansion at Calcot Park, which replaced the original manor house of Tilehurst.

He died at his home on 6 September 1627 and was buried in an elaborate tomb in the Ladychapel, St Michael's, Tilehurst.
