This border crossing is the most relaxed since the other two largely link the capitals and the larger cities, and it is also the only crossing point situated on a plain; the other two - Deve Bair (Kriva Palanka-Kyustendil) and Lisichkovo (Delčevo-Blagoevgrad) - are situated at the peaks of mountains.

The crossing is named after the two closest settlements situated along the road on either side of the frontier: Novo Selo is a near-by Macedonian village in the oblast of Strumica and Petrich is a small Bulgarian town situated in the Blagoevgrad Province.
According to the Treaty of Berlin of 1878 the border between the liberated Principality of Bulgaria and the autonomous Eastern Rumelia followed the summit of the Balkan mountains and went southwards between Pirdop and Dushintsi eventually following the Topolnitsa river at Petrich.
Two football teams are named after the mountain range, PFC Belasitsa from the nearby Bulgarian town of Petrich and FC Belasica from Strumica in the Republic of Macedonia.
El Al Flight 402, a Lockheed L-049 Constellation pressurized four-engine propliner, registered 4X-AKC, was an international passenger flight from Vienna, Austria, to Tel Aviv, Israel, via Istanbul, Turkey, on July 27, 1955, which strayed into Bulgarian airspace and was shot down by two Bulgarian MiG-15 jet fighters and crashed near Petrich, Bulgaria.
Several squares and streets in Bulgarian towns and cities are named after Livingston Island, such as Livingston Island Square in Samuil and Kula, and Livingston Island Street in Gotse Delchev, Yambol, Petrich, Sofia, Lovech and Vidin.
It is located north of Belasitsa, northeast of the Macedonian town of Strumica and northwest of the Bulgarian town of Petrich.
