The JRC has seven scientific institutes, located at six different sites in Belgium (Brussels and Geel), Germany (Karlsruhe), Italy (Ispra), the Netherlands (Petten) and Spain (Seville), with a wide range of laboratories and unique research facilities.
Examples are located in Idaho (United States), the PINSTECH National Laboratory (PNL) in Pakistan and in Petten in the Netherlands.
From 1885 to 1900, he was Professor of History, Latin and Elocution at Claverack College where his pupil Stephen Crane heard Van Petten's Civil War reminiscences which became the base for The Red Badge of Courage.
