After retiring from motion pictures at the dawn of sound, Hampton turned to opera and made her debut with the Philadelphia Opera in Manon.
She was born in Mexico City where she started her musical studies; she later attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, then Philadelphia College of Performing Arts (PCPA), where she studied with Adeline Tomasone (Philadelphia Opera and Philadelphia Orchestra), and was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree Magna Cum Laude (1985).
Battista helped Maloney translate Die Fledermaus into English for the Philadelphia Opera Company (1943), and they collaborated on a television talk show, The Maloneys, on the DuMont Television Network (1947–1948).
