In 2004, Hugill was nominated for the BT Digital Music Awards for his Internet project with the Philharmonia Orchestra – The Sound Exchange.
His music has been performed at the 26th Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music, the Conservatoire Américain in Fontainebleau, France (where he taught in the summer of 1992), and the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Away from broadcasting, Michael has scripted and hosted concerts for the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in Birmingham.

He has performed as soloist with numerous orchestras and conductors, including the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Opera Symphony Orchestra, Halle Orchestra (Rory Macdonald), Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Petri Sakari), Tapiola Sinfonietta (Paavo Berglund), the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra (John Storgards) and the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Lorin Maazel.
As a soloist he has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Orchestra of St. Johns Smith Square and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and is an active chamber music player and performs many recitals with James Pearson.
