As a teenager, he attended summer camps at Torch Lake, Michigan, and Boothbay, Maine, where he enjoyed swimming, tennis, and baseball.
After that, he transferred to Torrejon Air Base, Spain, from September 1983 January 1985, where he was the F-16 aircraft commander and instructor pilot for the 614th Tactical Fighter Squadron.

Early in 1942 he organized the Anti-Submarine Warfare Operations Research Group (ASWORG), later ORG, for the U.S. Navy, after the US had entered World War II and was faced with the problem of Nazi German U-boat attacks on transatlantic shipping.
In 1955 he was send to MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory run by Charles Stark Draper to work on the development of Inertial navigation systems sharing ideas with pioneers as Norbert Wiener and Harold Chestnut.
