With the support of then president Cecil Mackey, Saff modelled Graphicstudio after the Pratt Graphics Center, Tamarind Press, and Gemini G.E.L. The first artist to participate at Graphicstudio was Philip Pearlstein.
The Pearlsteins moved to East 4th Street, taking over an apartment from fellow figure painter Lester Johnson, and Philip enrolled in the Masters in Art History program at New York University Institute of Fine Arts.
