Brigadier Sir Philip Toosey (1904-1975), who while prisoner-of-war of the Japanese in that war was the officer in charge of building the Bridge on the River Kwai.
Both the book and film outraged former prisoners because Toosey did not collaborate with the enemy, unlike the fictional Colonel Nicholson.

Toosey also organised the smuggling in of food and medicine, working with Boonpong Sirivejjabhandu.
