Camp Pickett

Camp Pickett (San Juan Island) on San Juan Island disputed territory with British Canada during the Pig War.

Pig War

Brigadier-General William S. Harney, commanding the Dept. of Oregon, initially dispatched 66 American soldiers of the 9th Infantry under the command of Captain George Pickett to San Juan Island with orders to prevent the British from landing.

Captain George Pickett, later of Pickett's Charge fame, was in charge of the initial American landing force.

An episode of Hey Arnold! was based on the Pig War (Season 3, Episode 17).


Jacob Kamm

Kamm married Caroline Augusta Gray on 13 September 1859 during the Pig War, on the PS Eliza Anderson steamer just outside Fort Hope, Canada.

Mount Prevost

The mount's modern name is a tribute to Captain James Charles Prevost, RN, who served aboard HMS Satellite and was British Commissioner in the San Juan Islands boundary dispute also known as The Pig War.
