Neue Pinakothek | Alte Pinakothek | Pinakothek der Moderne | ''The Siege of Cosel'', 1808, Oil on canvas, 202 x 305 cm, Neue Pinakothek |
As a painter, he may be judged by "The Pastor's Daughter of Taubenhain," in the Pinakothek, Munich, and six canvases in the Schack Gallery at Munich.
In 1824 he painted Crown Prince Ludwig at the Spanish Wine Tavern in Rome (Neue Pinakothek, Munich) a work commissioned by the prince himself, who is shown at an informal gathering of artists, mostly German, with a view of the Aventine Hill visible through an open door.
After receiving little formal education, he went to Munich in 1804 where he studied for a time under Professor Hauber and copied pictures in the Pinakothek (Neue Pinakothek).
A 'Madonna and Child, with St. John,' and the 'Infant Christ' are in the Pinakothek at Munich.
He created 18 colossal statues representing the leading German provinces for the Befreiungshalle at Kelheim; 60 busts for the Pinakothek (Munich); a statue of King Maximilian II for Lindau (1854); a monument of Count Platen at Ansbach (1858); the monument of Marshal Cachahiba d'Argolo in BahÃa, Brazil; a statue of King Ludwig I of Bavaria for Kelheim.
The sketches which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek, after being copied in wax on a large scale by Nilsen, in the northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich.
