The intent was to have three companies of Territorial Rangers, two were formed in the mining camp of Pinos Altos, known as the "Arizona Guards" and the "Minute Men", and another, the "Arizona Rangers", in Mesilla by Captain James Henry Tevis.
Senator George Hearst invested in several Pinos Altos mines, including the Mina Grande and the Pacific Mine.

It occurs in coniferous forests from south-eastern Arizona (Huachuca Mountains) and south-western New Mexico (Pinos Altos Mountains) southward in the Sierra Madre Occidental to the State of Durango in Mexico.
