In 1883, Charles Eastick, a chemist at the Abram Lyle & sons (now part of Tate & Lyle) refinery in Plaistow formulated how it could be refined to make a preserve and sweetener for cooking.
Born in Plaistow, Placentia, California as one of eight children, Bevan worked as a nurse for much of her younger life.
He was created a life peer as Baron Sterling of Plaistow, of Pall Mall in the City of Westminster in 1990 in Margaret Thatcher’s resignation honours list.
