In the 1970s, virtuoso players such as The Boys of the Lough's Robin Morton, The Chieftains' Peadar Mercier, Planxty's Christy Moore, and De Dannan's Johnny "Ringo" McDonagh further developed playing techniques.
The Greek bouzouki, in the newer tetrachordo (four course/eight string, or τετράχορδο) version developed in the mid-twentieth century, was introduced into Irish Traditional Music in the late 1960s by Johnny Moynihan of the popular folk group Sweeney’s Men, and popularized by Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny in the group Planxty.
Matt Molloy joined internationally known ensemble The Chieftains, and Kevin Burke, after several solo projects, including two with Mícheál Ó Domhnaill, helped found the band Patrick Street with Jackie Daly (formerly of De Dannan) and Andy Irvine (formerly part of Planxty).
