The railway company had hoped to tap the coal traffic from Plashetts colliery that opened in the 1850s but this proved disappointing, although there was some traffic from forestry in the area.
Plashetts was served by Plashetts railway station on the Border Counties Railway which linked the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, near Hexham, with the Border Union Railway at Riccarton Junction.
