It is named for George Pogue, who along with John Wesley McCormick founded what would become the city of Indianapolis.

Charles Edward Pogue is a film and television writer who has worked in the sci-fi/fantasy, horror, and thriller genres, and he has also scripted several Sherlock Holmes adaptations (The Sign of Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and Hands of a Murderer).

From 1997-2001, Pogue served on the Board of Directors of the Writers Guild of America, west.
Forrest Pogue was for many years the Executive Director of the George C. Marshall Foundation as well as Director of the Marshall Library located on the campus of Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia.
In 1994 Aviation Week & Space Technology established the L. Welch Pogue Award for Lifetime Achievement in Aviation, naming Pogue its first recipient.
