The playoff result was 2–1 (0–0 in the first leg in Porto and 2–1 in Pleven) for the Bulgarians.

Portugal was to play in Subgroup A of Group Four with Israel and West Germany for a place in the second qualifying round.


Ilídio Vale

On 23 March 2011, Ilídio Vale reached the 2009–11 International Challenge Trophy Final after Portugal U23 beat the Italy Lega Pro U21 3–2, overcoming a 0-2 defeat in the half-time.

He was a member of Costa Rica U23 team who competed at 2004 Summer Olympics, playing the full 90 minutes in all matches as Costa Rica lost to Argentina on the quarterfinals and scoring in the group stage match against Portugal.

Rui Jorge played for the Portuguese U-21 side which lost the 1994 European Championship final to Italy (1–2) and the Olympic team who finished fourth at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
