The name Godaan is tribute to a legendary novel by Premchand, who belonged to Varanasi.
Nāthūrām Premī excelled in the field of literature as a poet, editor, writer and publisher earning respect and affection of his contemporaries like Munshi Premchand, Mahaviraprasad Dwivedi, Rahul Sankrityayan, Pandit Sukhlalji, Muni Jinavijayaji, Ganeshprasadji Varni, Pandit Becharadasji Doshi, Pandit Agarchand Nahata and Dr Dalsukh Malvania.

Other famous woks published include Munshi Premchand's classic novel, Godān and short story collections titled Nava Nidhi and Sapta Saroj.
Arshia Sattar in a review of the translation, states that "Premchand has always used his women characters as the lens through which society is critiqued. A reading his 'Sevasadan' in English translation almost 90 years after it was written brings home the fact that little has changed: women are still striving to control their own destinies".
