Maria Alves da Silva Cavaco Silva (born São Bartolomeu de Messines, 19 March 1938) is the wife of Aníbal Cavaco Silva, incumbent President of the Portuguese Republic and, as such, is the current First Lady of Portugal, since her husband's election in 2006.
Carvalho was awarded with medal of Ordem da Liberdade by Cavaco Silva, President of Portugal, on June 10, 2009.

In October 2003, Jorge Sampaio, then the President of Portugal, invited the Presidents of Finland, Germany, as well as of soon-to-be EU members Hungary, Latvia and Poland to Arraiolos in order to discuss the consequences of the 2004 enlargement of the European Union and plans for a Constitution for Europe.
On 22 May 2012 Geoffrey Hull was awarded the honour of Comendador da Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique (Knight Commander of the Order of Prince Henry) by the President of Portugal, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, for services to the Portuguese language.
Former President of Portugal, Mário Soares, bestowed on him the Order of the Infante for his contribution to literature in Portugal, while the city council of Lajes do Pico awarded him an Honorary Citizenship.
