4 unusual facts about Principia

Benjamin Motte

Motte's edition of Isaac Newton's Principia (1729) was translated by Andrew Motte (1696–1734), his brother a mathematician and very briefly the lecturer on geometry at Gresham College.

Firmin Abauzit

Newton corrected in the second edition of his Principia an error pointed out by Abauzit, and, when sending him the Commercium Epistolicum, said, "You are well worthy to judge between Gottfried Leibniz and me."

Johann Georg von Soldner

Other prescient work that became unpopular and largely forgotten for similar reasons possibly Henry Cavendish's light-bending calculations, John Michell's 1783 study of gravitational horizons and the spectral shifting of light by gravity, and even Isaac Newton's study in "Principia" of the gravitational bending of the paths of "corpuscles", and his description of light-bending in "Opticks".

Saint Marcella

Apparently moved by God's to compassion, the soldiers directed Marcella and her pupil, Principia, to the church of St. Paul, which had been set up as a sanctuary by Alaric.

Fred Onovwerosuoke

His tutelage under Dowcett at Principia was said to unleash a creative individualism that eventually evolved into a career as a composer with works that bear influences from Africa, the Caribbean and the American Deep South.

Loup Verlet

M. David Stirling

He excelled in track and football at Principia and even received offers to try out for the San Diego Chargers and the Chicago Bears of the National Football League.

Opticks

Voltaire popularised Newtonian science, including the content of the both the Principia and the Opticks, in his Elements de la philosophie de Newton (1738), and after about 1750 the combination of the experimental methods exemplified by the Opticks and the mathematical methods exemplified by the Principia were established as a unified and comprehensive model of Newtonian science.

Oregon Convention Center

Each of the towers has a focal point artwork, with a colorful 40-foot long Chinese dragon boat suspended in the east tower, and Principia by Jones/Ginzel, a dramatic Foucault pendulum hanging over a gilded halo of rays and an inlaid fantasy solar system in the floor of the north tower.

Principia College Historic District

Principia College Historic District, at Principia College, near the village of Elsah, Illinois, is a site significant for being the final phase of Bernard Maybeck's career as a designer of houses and public buildings.

Principia Ethica
