Her father would later serve as Minnesota Attorney General from 1955 to 1960 and then as Chief Judge, United States District Court for the District of Minnesota and as U.S. Attorney.

In July 2008, she announced that she would be challenging Al Franken, who had been endorsed by the state Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, for the party's nomination in the U.S. Senate election.

A graduate of the University of Minnesota, she worked for Hubert Humphrey, as both Senator and Vice President, and Young Life before teaching third grade and special education.

She was a candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2008 Minnesota U.S. Senate election.
