Along with his cousin, Hao Haidong he would become a professional footballer and played for Qingdao Hainiu, Shanghai Pudong and Tianjin Teda.

By 1994 the Chinese FA had demanded full professionalism and Hao Haitao would join second tier football club Qingdao Hainiu where he saw the club win the division title and promotion to the top tier.
Qingdao Hainiu F.C., a football club established in 2013, currently plays in the China League One.
