Additionally, on retirement, the Quapaw tribe presented them with colorful tribal blankets in honor of the sensitive work that had been undertaken on their ancestors’ burial mounds.
Discovery of lead and zinc ores in the area extended the Tri-State mining district and resulted in a population boom as thousands of miners moved into the area.

It is significant as “the only prehistoric pyramidal mound center known south of Benton in the middle of the Saline River valley, and the only known late prehistoric mound center in the Saline River basin north of the Felsenthal region.” The site was an center of society and religion on the northeastern edge of the Caddoan civilization, and was possibly the closest Caddoan center to the prehistoric Quapaw centers in the Arkansas River valley.
In 1831, the Federal Government reacquired part of what would eventually become Ottawa County to resettle some smaller tribes, These included two tribes of Seneca, Shawnee, Quapaw, Peoria, Kaskaskias, Miami, Ottawa and Wyandotte.
