In 1179 Queen Eleanor of England donated Alcabón to the St. Thomas Cantuariense chapel, located within the Santa Maria de Toledo cathedral, remaining so until its sale in 1482 to Gutierre de Cardenas, first Duke of Maqueda.
These figures represent Queen Eleanor of Castile and they were carved for the Waltham Cross, one of the twelve monumental crosses commissioned by Eleanor’s husband, King Edward I, after the Queen’s death in Harby, Nottinghamshire in 1290.
Queen Eleanor was present at the peace negotiations between Francis and Charles in Aigues-Mortes in 1538.
