Planning for a replacement escort vessel started in 1998 with the ordering of a research vessel, the RV Triton, to study whether a trimaran design was practical for such a large and complex vessel.
In 2003 the launch was initially set to take place on September 2 from the deck of RV Triton off the coast of St Ives.
Following the end of the Future Surface Combatant project, it was decided that the Triton was no longer necessary, so in 2005, she was sold to Gardline Marine Sciences Limited which is part of the Gardline group and was converted into a multi-role survey vessel.
