They divorced in 1989 and in 2003 he married Alexandra du Luart, granddaughter of Lord Butler of Saffron Walden (only daughter of his second son, Sir Adam Butler).

When the Butler Education Act 1944 came into force in 1945, the school became a county maintained secondary grammar school, and only admitted pupils who had passed the Eleven plus exam.
Notable alumni of the school include Adam Butler the second of four children of Rab Butler, the politician and John Ailwyn Fellowes, 4th Baron de Ramsey (1942-) a landowner, agriculturalist and first chairman of the Environment Agency.
