On 4 January 2005, Troop B 1/104 Cavalry, augmented with platoons from A and C Troops and teams from the 104th Long Range Surveillance Detachment were mustered into Federal Service as part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division, and served in ar Ramadi, Iraq from July 2005 to July 2006 attached to the 2nd Marine Division and then the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.
In July the British resumed their advance, making for Ramadi.
In 2004 a donkey in Ramadi was loaded with explosives and set off towards a US-run checkpoint.
The 947th Engineer Company (CSE) was re-located to Ramadi, Iraq in January 2006 and remained there until their redeployment in October 2006.
Ramadi is located in a fertile, irrigated, alluvial plain, within Iraq's Sunni Triangle.

These included a car bombing in Latifiya that left 5 dead and 10 injured, and an explosion at a stadium in Ramadi that killed 4 and wounded 12 others.
The 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment received the Navy Unit Commendation for its work in east Ramadi, and has also been recommended for a Valorous Unit Award.
