In olden days, RK community used to live in and around forts serving royalties in military and administration, e.g. Bekal Fort, Mirjan Fort, Chandragiri Fort etc.
It is believed that the 'Koteyar'/'Ramakshatriya' community found in Bekal, Panayal and other places in Kasargod were brought to this land by the Nayaks to strengthen and defend the fort.
The surname also occurs among some Ramakshatriya (Kotegar) in Udupi, Kundapur region, Vokkaligas (in Shimoga) and Goud Saraswat Brahmins.
