Ammiato Abbey was built by Ratchis, King of the Lombards, and afterwards rose to great power and influence.
Epiphania, Epifania or Pyphania (d. 800) is recorded in the late medieval traditions of Pavia as daughter of Ratchis (744/749 – 756/757), King of the Lombards and of Italy.
Born between 720 and 735 in Friuli in Italy to this possibly noble Lombard family, Paul received an exceptionally good education, probably at the court of the Lombard king Ratchis in Pavia, learning from a teacher named Flavian the rudiments of Greek.

During the first decade of Fulcoald abbacy he cultivated a close relationship with Duke Lupo of Spoleto, who in turn was a close ally of King Ratchis, a fact which seems to have greatly increased the abbey's patronage by the greater landowners of the Sabina.
