Born in Ravenscroft in 1925, he worked in the nurseries of McMinnville, hoeing bulbs as a teenager for $.10 per hour.

High Barnet is home to an Odeon cinema, the Barnet Museum, the All Saints Art Centre, the traditional annual Barnet Fair, which was chartered in Medieval times, the Ravenscroft local park and Barnet recreational park, a now disused well that was frequented by, among others, Samuel Pepys, and many restaurants and public houses.
Ravenscroft proposed that the land should be sold to raise funds to help maintain Ravenscroft Chapel – a chapel he had erected inside Barnet Parish Church in memory of his father, Thomas Ravenscroft, who died in 1630.

Returning to Virginia, Ravenscroft lived as a country gentleman at Spring Bank in Lunenburg County for eighteen years, during which period he reportedly "never bent his knees in prayer, nor did he once open a Bible."
In 2010, Ravenscroft played on albums and on sessions with Duffy, and Mary Hopkin and Daft Punk and Ben's Brother Jamie Hartman.

In 2012 Raphael Ravenscroft created the music for a series of films featuring photographer Don McCullin and in 2011-2012 composed for several major advertising campaigns around the world.
The result was dubbed the "Speed Eight" (official designation 'AJP8') after Al Melling, John Ravenscroft and Peter Wheeler, a 4.2 L V8 producing 360 horsepower (268 kW).
