He received his laurea degree in physics from the University of Trieste, Italy, with a thesis titled “Binary Galaxies in the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) Redshift Survey.”
Redshift surveys have been a common means by which this has been accomplished with some of the most famous including the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope.
Rowan-Robinson's research interests include: The Spitzer Space Telescope SWIRE project; The European Large Area ISO Survey; The UK SCUBA Survey (see James Clerk Maxwell Telescope); The IRAS PSC Redshift Survey ; the Herschel Space Observatory SPIRE instrument; the Planck Surveyor HFI.
