Reporters Without Borders reported that, during the previous week, the editor had been the subject of specific threats following an interview she had conducted with Geneva general prosecutor, Bernard Bertossa (on 10 May 2002) concerning the Swiss bank accounts of several top Kazakh officials, including President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
There were news organizations that did not sign the agreement, such as Reforma and La Jornada, Proceso magazine and MVS (TV network), and Reporters Without Borders also refused to sign as it said the agreement went against its standards of press freedom.
San San Nweh has won numerous awards for her work, including a PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award in 1995 and a Reporters Without Borders-Fondation de France Prize in 1999.
