Chichester won the 1985 Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor, but was defeated in the general election by state senator L. Douglas Wilder, who would go on to become the first African-American state governor since Reconstruction.
In February 2009, Republican Party of Virginia chair Jeff Frederick announced that he would not run for reelection to the Virginia House of Delegates.
First, his daughter, Kate Obenshain of Winchester, became the first woman to head the Republican Party of Virginia.
