In 1867 he was the head of an international committee to promote the Channel Tunnel, which contemplated a submarine railroad between England and France.
In 1871, some 2 years after the death of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster his wife, Lady Elizabeth Leveson-Gower, and one daughter gave a plot of land for the construction of a hospital in her husband’s memory.
After graduation, he earned the patronage of Lord Grosvenor.
